Must Haves for a Day at the Beach

By Buffy York
I know that I just did a “what’s in my handbag” post last week, but this past weekend my family and I went to Pass Christian, Mississppi for an early beach trip and came home on Sunday and the pool was open for business. Since school is out for us and most are headed somewhere that involves water I thought it would be a great time to share with you what I pack in my beach bag. My children are old enough now that floaties and swim diapers no longer take up any space in my bag so this would be my “really grown up list.” A few of the item on my list are repeat offenders but should probably claim their homestead exemption in a beach bag because that is where they make the most sense.
Mar Y Sol Beach Bag
I’ve been obsessed with these for a few years and finally bit the bullet and bought one this year. I love the pom-poms. What can I say?
I introduced these to you in last week’s post and they have covered up my Instagram, but a TuLi scarf makes for the perfect sarong when you are at the beach or poolside. You know how sometimes you are sweating like a maniac and the thought of putting on your full-blown cover up is too much. This TuLi ties up beautifully at your waist, covers up all of your junk and looks super stylish on your way to the tiki bar…I mean bathroom.
Tkees Flip Flops
Best Ever. Enough Said. But I will say more. They come in a gazillion colors. I wear mine daily. I buy a new pair every year! Done.
One Truffle Clarity Pouch
I love a pouch and this one is great for a beach bag because you can see everything in it. With sandy hands you don’t want to be fumbling around in your bag and a Truffle makes it so easy to see what you are looking for. They come in several sizes and colors are as far a pouches go they are super cool looking.
Beauty Counter Sunscreen
This sunscreen is it! It is SPF 30 and it is au naturale. It is a safe, water-resistant, mineral sun block that gets the job done without the white streaks or smell of sunscreen. You can use it on your face and body and most importantly, on your children without hearing the screams resulting from a stinging sunscreen.
Beauty Counter Peppermint Lip Balm
I am totally all in with this lip balm. I love anything peppermint and this is the best. It also contains a natural sunscreen. Putting it on my lips just makes me a little happier and you know what they say…”If mama ain’t happy.”
While I may not have to deal with my girls’ pool toys anymore their hair is a whole other issue. The Wet Brush is the best at managing through the tangles of windblown and salt or chlorine soaked hair.
My color treated hair turns extremely red when it is exposed sun and my hairdresser just tells me to soak it in some argan oil, slap on a hat and let the sun warm it up. A hat protects your hair from the sun and the oil is like a deep conditioner.
Bobbi Brown Bronzing Gel
If you are anything like me, you have spent too much money on lasers and microneedles and creams to expose your face to the sun. However, I do love a tan face and this gel is the best bronzer I have found. It only takes a little bit to give you a nice healthy natural glow and as an added bonus it is SPF 15. It rubs into your skin beautifully not looking caked on like a powder or cream bronzer.
If you have been reading my blog for any time at all you know that I am obsessed with Well-Kept Wipes. They are amazing for cleaning you phone and sunglasses. When Tim and I were on our honeymoon a lady came around and cleaned our sunglasses with a bowl of Windex and a cloth I am sure came straight from a dust free environment. These are like that minus the poolside massages and frozen fruit on a skewer. Whish Deodorant Swipes are also a beach bag must have. Surely no explanation needed.
This is the amazing house we stayed in this past weekend in Pass Christian on the incredible Mississippi Gulf Coast, and where the photographs above were taken. This Live Oak survived Katrina and is no joke. If you can’t relax here you need to seek medical attention. A big thank you to our gracious hosts Katherine and Jeremy Landry. If these porches could talk?
