According to the calendar the official end of summer is three weeks away and it is still crazy hot outside, but yesterday was Labor Day and I am done with Summer. School is back in session, college football kicked off this past weekend and the September Issue of Vogue is on the stands, so as far as I am concerned it’s Fall. It is time to start shopping, if you haven’t already, for your fall wardrobe. I always buy jeans and sweaters and jackets throughout the season, but I like to buy my boots early, and in Birmingham there is no better place to find exclusive designer lines than Gus Mayer.
The shoe salon at Gus Mayer is much like the restaurant scene in Birmingham. The same way chefs Frank Stitt and Chris Hastings have raised the bar for our cuisine expectations, owner David Kraselsky and his daughter Katie Kraselsky Held, have set our standards high for comfort, quality and style in footwear. The Kraselsky Family has been in the shoe business for decades and have owned the shoe salon at Gus Mayer since 1972. David bought the family business in 1987 and together with his expertise and relationships in the industry, and Katie’s unparalleled eye for fashion, Gus Mayer Shoes has become a destination for the trendiest to the most sophisticated of shoe buyers.
David travels to Europe throughout the year and seeks out boutique shoe factories. Gus Mayer carries several lines of Italian leather shoes and boots that can only be found in a handful of retailers across the country, like the black boots I am wearing in the photographs above from the Italian brand Now. If you only buy one pair of boots this season this might be the one. With its block heel and a platform lug sole, this boot covers several fall trends and is a beautiful buttery black leather that can be worn over the knee, folded down below the knee or pushed down around the ankle. As Carolyn Martin was showing me how the boot can be styled we decided that it needed to come with a DVD.
The selection of Hunter rain boots and Sorel outdoor boots is like no other in Birmingham. Gus also carries Jeffrey Campbell, Vince and Janet & Janet to name a few of their more casual lines. The only Stuart Weitzman “store-in-store” is located inside Gus Mayer Shoes in Birmingham and high-end lines like Chloe and Thierry Rabotin are located in the luxury designer department. Carolyn and the rest of the Gus Mayer Shoe Salon team offer old school “sit and fit” service with expert advice. Once they get to know a customer’s personal style and needs they are quickly on the phone to clients as new styles arrive. Shoes don’t stick around long at Gus.
